St. Louis Area Foodbank

Foodbank2c registered outlines

The mission of the St. Louis Area Foodbank is to feed hungry people by distributing food through our partner agencies, and educate the public about the nature of and solutions to the problems of hunger.

Serving the Bi-State Community for Over 35 Years

The St. Louis Area Foodbank began its service to the community in 1975. We started out in an office space on Lindell Boulevard that was supplied by the Red Cross Bi-State Chapter. In that first year, we distributed 135,000 pounds of food.

In 1978, we moved to Christ Church Cathedral and located our warehouse at the Globe-Democrat Building. Requiring more space as our distribution levels continued to climb, we relocated to 2101 Howard Street in 1983. We stayed there until 1986, when we purchased a building located at 5959 St. Louis Avenue.

In 2006, with the help of Boeing's lead gift of $1.5 million and countless other financial contributions, we were able to purchase the building that we currently reside in at 70 Corporate Woods. Our current facility has allowed us to significantly increase our pounds of food distributed annually. In addition, we can now store both frozen foods and produce on-site, along with all of our dry product. Our new facility also has a terrific volunteer center, where thousands of community members gather each year to sort and re-package food for members of our community in need.

In FY2011, we distributed more than 25 million pounds of food received from food companies and grocery stores, the USDA, Feeding America, and community food drives organized by area businesses, groups, and individuals. We are continually looking into new ways to stretch dollars and space to handle and distribute more food. We've also looked for ways to make sure food is reaching the people who need it most, including our Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, and CSFP Programs.

As we reflect on our years of service and celebrate the generosity of our community, the St. Louis Area Foodbank is already planning for the future. We know the battle against hunger in our region is far from over. We also know that it is only with your continued commitment and donations that we will be able to continue serving our neighbors in need for many years to come.
