When Erin, our server came to greet us, we knew that we were in for a treat. She might have been the friendliest server that I’ve had in years, not to mention patient. It’s never easy to wait on a large group during the Saturday night rush, but she was at our disposal from the minute we walked in. We let her know that we wanted to try some of the classics, and over the years of coming here, I had always wondered why everyone always talked about something called Broasted Chicken. I felt it was time to try it. According to Wikipedia, Broasting is a method of cooking chicken using a pressure fryer. Of course the 13 hours of marinating that Frank and Helen’s does before this “broasting” certainly must have something to do with the unreal taste of this “Fried Chicken”. It was crispy, tender, with great flavor and as moist as can be. I’ve never had Fried Chicken as good. One word for the chicken, WOW! We added a few sides to pass around with the chicken. The coleslaw was tasty, the beans were very flavorful, and the macaroni and cheese was, well, just okay.
We ordered three salads to pass around the table, which was more than enough. Fresh crisp lettuce, with large pieces of artichoke hearts, tomatoes, and of course pepperoncinis. Their home made Creamy Garlic house dressing was a perfect complement to a great salad.
As if the chicken wasn’t enough to satisfy our hunger, we had to have a pizza. Just as I remembered. It was extremely large, and more than enough for all of us. It was baked to perfection. Although it’s called St Louis style, it’s not your everyday thin as cardboard crust. They do serve that style if you want. The sauce was tangy and the meat seemed to be over flowing and the cheese was perfect.
The desserts looked good, but hey, I was here to reminisce. Could I really leave without showing my friends how good the Italian Roast Beef is? I don’t think so, and was I right. Perfectly seasoned, very tender and just the right amount of au jus, on very fresh French bread.
Can’t go back in time? Really? I did and I loved it. Take a journey back to when everything was so much simpler; have some amazing food, great service, and maybe even a little reminder of how good it was when we were young. Frank and Helen’s is the place to find it.
