Wizard World Comic Con St. Louis Returns This Weekend

Wizard World returns to St. Louis this weekend (April 7-9) to present St. Louis Comic Con, a sensory overload of sight and sound that celebrates popular culture across multiple spectrums.

The people-watching event of the spring is held at America’s Center downtown. Convention hours are Friday from 3:00pm-9:00pm, Saturday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm.

Geeks, nerds, gamers, cosplayers, superheroes, comic fans and children of all ages will get their fanboy on with a weekend of activities that includes photos and autographs with celebrity guests, fan panels, gaming, music and plenty of shopping from local and national vendors.

This year’s guest list features a wide range of talents from all area of popular culture, including Star Trek royalty Nichelle Nichols, Michael Rooker, whose been in everything (most notably The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy), Ian Somerhalter (Lost, The Vampire Diaries), Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and James and Oliver Phelps from the Harry Potter films. Wizard World is also bringing in comic book writers and illustrators as and celebrity cosplayers.

Hometown wrasslin’ star Randy Orton will be there along with fellow STL native, actor/director Sean Gunn, whose done quite well for himself with the Guardian of The Galaxy film franchise. The show also features a musical theme with Gene Simmons of KISS and Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork of The Monkees also attending.

In addition to celebrity Q & A sessions, programming includes panels on Feminism in Geek Culture, Sherlock, Doctor Who, cosplay, Making Board Games in St. Louis, Pokémon, Star Wars, how to break into comics, podcasting and much more. There’s also a masquerade featuring the finest in local cosplay.

For the kids there is plenty of programming including marionettes, puppeteers, costuming, and kids specific programming.

On Saturday night from 7:30-10 p.m. the convention will get messy with a Rocky Horror Picture Show Extravaganza complete with props and costumes. This special screening is presented by Wizard World in conjunction with legendary film producer Lou Adler, FOX Studios and the Rocky Horror Fan Club. There also will be a display of original props and costumes from the movie.

That night also features a live concert by Gene Simmons and his band at The Pageant. Simmons recently opened a Kiss-themed restaurant in Chesterfield.

If all of that was not enough there is a dealers room onsite selling anything and everything you could expect from geek culture, including jewelry, clothing, artwork, to of course…comic books.

Comics are of course the reason all of this business started and St. Louis’ comic book community will be out in full force looking to buy, sell or trade their favorite comics and meet the writers, artists and illustrators involved with their favorite hobby.
