Picks for the Weekend of Nov. 1

Written by

If you’re like me, you’re ready for the first post-Halloween weekend of this year where costumes are no longer mandatory but candy is still plentiful. Even though most of the spooky attractions close today, there is still plenty going on in our lovely city this weekend. Here are just a couple ideas:

San Francisco’s The Fresh and Onlys are back in St. Louis, but this time at Firebird on Friday, November 2nd at 8pm with Swayback, Admirals, and local band Troubadour Dali. Their new album Long Slow Dance was out in September of this year, and has more of the present-day garage-pop-pastiche that made us love them since they first entered our radar around 2008. Their melodies and lyrics have only gotten more and more romantic, but they still sound convincingly like a charming 60’s-rock revival band with a twenty-first century twist.

Friday, November 2nd | The Firebird | 8pm | All Ages | 21+ $10 | -21 $12

Charlseton, South Carolina band Shovels and Rope will be at Off Broadway on Saturday, November 3rd. How about a little boot-stomping-twang-laden country folk to mix up the weekend? Shovels and Rope is a husband/wife duo whose 2012 album, “’O’ Be Joyful” provides ample opportunity to hear Carry Ann Hearst’s powerful voice combined with whatever instruments the duo decide to pick up at any given time. It promises to be a rowdy and soulful show.

Saturday, November 3rd|Off Broadway|Doors 8:30|Show 9 | All Ages| 21+ $10|-21 $13

Not enough? Then I recommend extending the weekend one day longer to see Sharon Van Etten at Firebird on Monday, November 5th for some intimate folk-rock with a rising leading lady.
